Ember

“ Thank you.” I said through gritted teeth. Dr. ‘Daniels’ turned around, giving me one last glare and disappeared back through the doors. I looked up at my Mom with a disgusted face. Usually when I gave her that face, she would say, “ What?” and then we would go into the conversation. This time she said nothing. Her lips were frowning, and I could tell she was chewing on the inside of her cheek. Her hazel eyes didn’t look at me. The red flecks that usually made her eyes seem brighter, made them look more serious and full of worry.

Before I could ask what was wrong, I heard someone call my name.
“ EM! Are you okay?” Jamie appeared, followed by the rest of the guys.
“ Of course I’m okay! What, you think you guys can get rid of me that easily? A motor bike accident? Pah.” I laughed, and they relaxed a little, but they still seemed worried.
“ How’d you fall off anyways?” Chris asked, moving his way to the front.
“ I… don’t know. I heard a weird sound, and then the bike jerked and I flew off.”

“ God, Ember I’m so sorry.” Ben’s face was full of guilt.
“ What are you talking about?”
“ The circuits on the bike. They were totally fried. I- I must have messed up the wiring somehow.” He sputtered, her eyes getting sadder with each word he spoke. I shook my head.
“ Ben, you’re the best mechanic I know. So maybe you messed up on one tiny detail? Or maybe you didn’t. Maybe it was just a freak thing. Don’t worry about it.” I gave him a smile, but he just dropped his guilty gaze.

“ Does it hurt?” Chris reached his hand up to my head. Jamie snapped his hand away angrily.
“ She just got like twelve stitches. Of course it hurts, you dumbass.”

Everyone laughed and Chris looked at everyone angrily.
“ Only ten. And you know what the weirdest part was? My doctor was that insane driver from earlier today.”

“ Man, that’s creepy. I bet he’s a stalker.” Luke looked wearily at the doors the doctor had left out of.

“ I know! And he’s just as-” I began , but my Mom cut me off.

“ Ember come on. We’re leaving.” It was if she just broke out of a trance.
“ But Mom-”
“ Now.”

All the guys went silent, and I gave them a little wave and followed my mom out slowly. The car ride home was quiet and each passing moment made me more queasy. I didn’t know what had my usually easy-going mom, so… upset. But I didn’t like it.

I felt bad for making Ben feel so guilty, and making Jamie so worried. they probably regret teaching me to motorbike in the first place. But I don’t get it. I was going fine. Then I fell off. Why?

“ Mom, are you okay?” I asked as we got out of the car in the drive way.
“ Me? I’m fine. It’s you I’m worried about.”
“ It’s just a scratch.” I mumbled.
“ It’ll leave a scar.”
“ Scars are cool.”
“ I’ll get you some medicine to put on it, so it doesn’t look so bad.” She answered. Her voice sounded strangely empty, as if she was in the middle of day dreaming, or maybe she was sleep talking when she said that last line.
“ Mom?”
“ Yeah?”
“…never mind.”

We walked into the house, and she automatically walked into the kitchen. I was guessing I would spend the rest of the day inside. I walked up to my room, kicking off my shoes and placing my hat on the banister on my way up. I sat on my bed, gingerly touching the stitches on the right side of my forehead. I realized I had a bunch of cuts and scrapes on my arms and legs too. I leaned back on my bed, trying to make sense of everything that happened today. Did Jamie really wink at me? What’s that mean? Why did I fall off that bike? Why the hell does that doctor hate me? And what’s up with that dog that’s always around? Why is Chris so annoying? Did Jamie really wink at me? Does that mean he …Why do they even allow a dog to be in the Emergency room anyways? Why the hell does that grumpy doctor get special privileges. He didn’t look blind to me. When’s the next time I would be able to hang out with Jamie?

...

I woke to the soft murmuring of voices downstairs. I groaned, sitting up from my bed. My headache was ten times worse than it was when we first came home. I glanced out the window, seeing that it was dark out now. I hadn’t planned on falling asleep. I stood up and walked out of my room.

The hushed voices started getting clearer as I walked down the stairs. Then they stopped entirely as I walked into the kitchen. I walked over to the sink to pour myself a cup of water, and as I turned, I gasped.
A man sat in a chair across from my Mom. He had hair the color of sunshine, and his eyes were a gentle green. I blinked, unsure if what I was seeing was real. His face seemed so familiar, but his expression confused me. He stared at me, his mouth hung half open.

He closed his mouth, and tried to speak, but he cleared his throat first.
“ You’re right. She’s gotten so big.” He spoke with a shaky voice.
“ Dad?” It finally clicked in my head. A smile spread across his face, making the room light up. He stood and I ran into his arms, not even thinking. The last time I saw him I was 7 years old. I had talked to him over the phone a few times, but I couldn’t believe he was actually here.

My Dad looked down at me, and looked me straight in the eyes.
“ You have your Mother’s eyes.” He whispered. My mom used to tell me how everyone would always say she had her father’s eyes. But This is the first time someone noticed me and my Mom had practically the same eyes. The guys never paid attention to stuff like that, and I never hung around any family members that usually say that sort of stuff.
“ Dad, I miss you so much… I don’t even know what to say right now.” I laughed, hiding my tears in his shirt.
“ Why are you here? I’m so happy, but I mean, why? Is it because I got hurt? God, I should have cracked my head a long time ago. Why didn’t you say you were coming?”
He smiled at me, and just pulled his hug around me tighter.

Then my Dad’s face went serious when my Mom cleared her throat.
“ Ember.” He said. “ We have a lot to tell you.”

He sat me down in one of the kitchen chairs.

“ Ember, this is going to be very hard to explain.” My mom said slowly.
“ What is?”

My mom and Dad exchanged a weird glance.

“ You’re not like everyone else…” She said, her intense eyes staring straight into mine.
“ Uh, I know.” I shrugged.
“ Ember, I’m not talking about the fact that your sporty and friends with all the guys.”

“ Then what ARE you talking about?” I asked, screwing up my face in confusion.

“ You are special.” My Dad replied, the same seriousness as my Mom.
“ You guys have been telling me that all my life. Every parent tells their kid that.”
“ You are a different type of special.” My Mom threw in.
“ What the heck are you guys going on about?”
“ The Hourglass. It’s a group of people destined to protect the Prophecy. They are gifted with a special abilities. Four of them are the element keepers. Ice, fire, Wind, and Earth. Then there are other protectors, which have physic abilities, like mind reading, mind control, or different forms of mental powers. You’re mother and I, well, we were part of the Hourglass. We were two of the protectors.” My Dad had an excited gleam in his eyes, but his expression stayed stiff and trained on me.

“ Every so many years, the powers get passed on, and the next generation of protectors come along.” My Mom added.

I looked at both of them like they were crazy. They were. They had to be. It figures as much. My Dad finally comes home, and we can finally be a little happy family, and then they go off the deep end. Fantastic.

“ I know what you’re thinking.” My Dad sighed. I suddenly felt guilty.
“ But we need to tell you this… Because you need to be prepared.”
“ Ember,” My Dad leaned closer. “ You’re one of the protectors now.”

“ If you haven’t noticed, I have no special abilities. I can’t read minds, or control water or fire or air or earth. I can’t do anything except sports.” I narrowed my eyes at them.

They looked at each other again. Then my Mom spoke up.

“ You’re going to stay with a friend of our’s. Well, she is their daughter actually. But you’re going to go stay with her, and help her. She needs to find-”

“ WHAT?!” I exclaimed. “ NO! YOU’RE SENDING ME AWAY? MOM. DAD JUST GOT HERE! I HAVEN’T SEEN HIM IN 7 YEARS! YOU CAN’T SEND ME AWAY! WHAT ABOUT ALL MY FRIENDS?!”

“ Ember, once you start getting powerful enough to use your power, it’ll be dangerous. For you AND your friends. You saw what happened today! You almost killed yourself!” My Dad’s worried expression made lines in his forehead.

“ I DIDN’T DO ANYTHING. BEN MESSED UP ON THE WIRING. I DON’T HAVE ANY SPECIAL POWERS. YOU BOTH ARE CRAZY.” I screamed, standing up from my chair.

The lights began to flicker, and one of the light bulbs in the ceiling smashed. I gasped and froze. My head whirled, and confusion swept through me. I shook my head, beginning to get scared. My Dad stood up and wrapped his arms around me.

“ Don’t worry.” He told me. My mom stood up and joined our little hug.
“ You’ll be okay.” she assured. My legs began feeling weak, but my parents held me up. I buried my face into my dad’s shirt until my fear went away. The stitches on my head seemed to be on fire, and my head throbbed in pain.

“ What exactly am I in this hourglass thing anyways?” I asked in a shaky voice.
